Calcutta University (CU) has been caught napping again. More than 50 students of the university''s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) course, who have failed to clear their Part I exam this year, wants their papers to be reviewed.
However, CU officials claim that since BBA is a professional course, the university does not have any system of reviewing papers.
Thus, the hapless students are left with no option but to run from pillar to post in the process.
The BBA course conducted by CU is of three years duration and is offered at several CU affiliated colleges such as Asutosh College, St Xavier''s College, Rashtraguru Surendranath College, Mrinalini College at Birati etc. As per rules the minimum pass mark is 40 per cents in each paper. A minimum 50 per cent in aggregate is must for promotion to next year. The result of part I exam this year were declared in early September. It was found that most of the students of this course have failed to secure the minimum pass marks in Economics. "When most of us have secured around 80 per cent marks in all other papers, we were awarded only 20-30 per cent marks in Economics. When we asked for a review, the authorities turned down our pleas," said a student of BBA, St Xavier''s College. Surprised at CU''s response to the students'' review request Debabrata Choudhury, principal of Asutosh College said, "When a review system exists in CU, we don''t know why the pleas of our students have been turned down."
Meanwhile, CU''s decision is going to hurt many in more than one way. "We took a loan to get my sister admitted to this course. The course fee is a steep Rs 95,000. The prospectus and admission form, costing Rs 1,000, has no mention of this review rule," pointed out A. Banerjee, whose younger sister is a student of BBA at Rashtraguru Surendranath College.
Commenting on the problem CU pro vice-chancellor (academic) Suranjan Das said, "After receiving request letters from students, parents and the principals, we are contemplating to introduce the review system for BBA."
